Abstract

A top cover for a convertible top of a motor vehicle, especially a passenger motor vehicle, which consists of two top sections (8,10) disposed one behind the other and detachably connected with each other by a sliding clasp fastener (14). The first top section (8) includes an inner layer (16) within the area of the fastener (14) whose one end (17) is connected with the first top section (8) and whose other end (18) is connected with the second top section (10) by way of the fastener (14). The first top section (8) thereby overlaps the fastener (14) and the edge area (19) of the second top section (10). The inner layer (16) consists of a yieldingly elastic material such as a stretch fabric arranged under prestress between the first and second top sections (8,10), for easy actuation of the clasp fastener (14) and correct tensioning of the top cover. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Top cover for a convertible top of a vehicle, especially of a passenger motor vehicle The present invention relates to a top cover of a vehicle, especially of a passenger motor vehicle, which is composed of two top sections disposed one behind the other and detachably connected with each other by means of a sliding clasp fastener, whereby the two top sections form outer cover sections of the vehicle, the first top section includes an inner layer within the area of the fastener, whose one end is sewn together with the first top section and whose other end is connected by way of the fastener with the second top section, and also the first top section overlaps the fastener and edge area of the second top section.
In a known foldable top of the aforementioned type (U.S. Patent 2,002,596), the two top sections and the inner layer of the top cover disposed therebetween are made each of the same top material. This construction has the disadvantage that the material used for the top cover, by reason of its low elasticity, cannot compensate, during assembly, for the manufacturing tolerances of the body and top cover. Instead, with a closed convertible top, either fold formations occur locally at the top cover (oversize) or relatively high forces act on the sliding clasp fastener (undersize).
It is the object of the present invention to ensure that the manufacturing tolerances referred to above are reliably compensated for by the top cover, and the top cover is always functionally properly stretched with a closed foldable top. Furthermore, easy actuation of the sliding clasp fastener is to be achieved.
The present invention consists in a top cover for a convertible top of a vehicle, comprising two top sections disposed one behind the other and detachably connected with each other by a sliding clasp fastener, the two top sections forming outer cover sections of the vehicle, the first top section including within the area of the fastener an inner layer whose one end is sewn together with the first top section and whose other end is connected with the second top section by way of the fastener, and the first top section overlapping the fastener and the edge area of the second top section, the inner layer consisting of a yieldingly elastic material which is arranged under prestress between the first top section and the second top section.
The advantages principally achieved by the present invention reside in that the top cover, by reason of the construction of the resiliently elastic inner layer as well as the arrangement thereof under prestress between the first and the second top section, compensates for the manufacturing tolerances of body and top cover and effects a functionally correct tensioning of the top cover, especially in the vehicle longitudinal direction, that is, on the one hand, a fold formation is avoided in the top cover and, on the other, easy actuation of the sliding clasp fastener is achieved.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a partial side elevational view of a foldable top of a passenger motor vehicle according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view, on an enlarged scale, taken along the line ll-ll of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a perspective partial view of the top cover according to the present invention.
Referring now to Figure 1 the passenger motor vehicle 1 includes a body 2 which comprises above a belt line 3 a foldable top 4 that extends from a wind-shield frame 5 to a rear area 6. The foldable top 4 includes a top cover 7 and a pivoted lever system of conventional construction and therefore not described and illustrated in detail herein, which carries the top cover 7 and is pivotally connected at the body 2.
The top cover 7 is composed of a first top section 8 arranged adjacent and secured to the wind-shield frame 5 and of a second top section 10 disposed therebehind, as viewed in the driving direction, and provided with a rear window 9. A sliding clasp fastener 14 extending transversely of the vehicle provided for the detachable connection of the two top sections 8 and 10 which, as viewed in the vehicle longitudinal direction, takes place between a rear edge 11 of a door window 12 and a forward boundary edge 13 of the rear window 9. The fastener 14 is actuablefrom the passenger space 15 (Figures 1 and 2).
In order to compensate for manufacturing tolerances which occur at the body 2 and in the top sections 8 and 10, an inner layer 16 consisting of a resiliently elastic material, preferably stretch cord, is provided at the inner side of the top cover 7, which is arranged under prestress between the first top section 8 and the second top section 10 (Figure 2).
The inner layer 16, in the illustrated embodiment, is sewn together at its forward end 17 with the first top section 8, disposed in front as viewed in the driving direction, whereas the rear end 18 is connected by way of the sliding clasp fastener 14 with the forward edge area 19 of the second top section 10. Therebeyond, the first top section 8 is so constructed that it overlaps the inner layer 16, the fastener 14 and the forward edge area 19 of the second top section 10 along the outside thereof. As a result thereof, penetration of water through the fastener 14 into the passenger space 15 is avoided.
However, the possibility also exists to securely sew together the inner layer 16 with the second rearward top section 10 and to arrange the sliding clasp fastener 14 between the rear end of the first top section 8 and the forward end of the inner layer 16.
With this construction, the second top section 10 is constructed so as to overlap.
The inner layer 16 as also the top section 8 or 10 connected therewith and the fastener 14 extend over the passenger space, as viewed in the vehicle transverse direction, and more particularly from belt line 3 to belt line 3 (Figure 3).
