Abstract
A reusable packing case comprises a base 1, a pair of force-in side walls 2, a pair of slide-in side walls 3, and a cover. The side walls may be folded onto the base and covered by the cover to provide a relatively flat arrangement so as to occupy less space when being returned. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in or relating to packing cases
The present invention relates to packing cases which are reusable.
Although various different types of packing case or box have been in use, such as cardboard boxes, wooden cargo boxes, etc, most such types are not reusable. Although a few types can be reused, they cannot in general be folded up to save space for ease of transporting back to the firms for reuse.
According to the invention, there is provided a packing case comprising a bottom, a first pair of side walls arranged to slide onto the bottom, a second pair of side walls arranged to be force fitted onto the base, and a cover, the bottom, the first and second side walls, and the cover being disassemblable and foldable for storage or transportation of the packing case when empty.
It is thus possible to save money by reuse of the packing case, which may be composed of six plastics pieces which can readily be disassembled and reassembled again.
It is further possible to reduce waste in houses, supermarkets and elsewhere because of such reusability.
The invention will be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is an exploded view of parts of a packing case constituting a preferred embodiment of the present invention, also showing a view from below of a bottom part thereof; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the case of
Figure 1 when assembled, also showing a cover.
The packing case comprises six parts, namely a bottom 1, two force-in side walls 2, two slide-in side walls 3 and a cover 4. The parts can be assembled or disassembled as shown in Figures 1 and 2. The bottom 1 has two vertical rims 10 on one pair of opposite sides, and two vertical rims 1 2 on the other pair of opposite sides. At the upper edge of the rims of each pair of vertical rims 10 and 12, there is provided a horizontally extending ledge or lock 11 and 14 respectively. A small protruding rim 1 3 is provided along the tops of the vertical rims 12 at each side of the ledges 14 for guiding the slide-in side walls 3.Adjacent each of the vertical rims 12 there is provided a guiding bar 17 for guiding the slide-in side walls 23 into a trough 1 5 disposed between each vertical rim 12 and the corresponding guiding bar
17.
At the lower part of the pairs of side walls 2 and 3 there is provided a pressing bar 21 and sliding bar 31, respectively, above which are provided a neck 22 and a neck 32, respectively, for the convenience of pressing and sliding operations. A wedge 34 is provided at each end of each slide-in side wall 3 with its thicker part disposed nearer the adjacent end of the side wall to prevent the pair of force-in side walls 2 from falling inwardly when set upright.
The slide-in side walls 3 can slide horizontally along the guiding bars 1 7 into the sliding troughs 1 5 to their correct positions, and can then be set up vertically with the horizontally extending ledges 14 entering into locking slots 33 formed in the side walls 3. The force-in side walls 2 can then be horizontally forced into the spaces between the bottom and the horizontally extending ledges 11 on the two opposite sides of the bottom 1, and are then set up vertically with the ledges 11 entering into locking slots 23 formed in the side walls 2.
The upper edges of the force-in side walls 2 and the slide-in side walls 3 are provided with chamfers 25 and 35, respectively, to provide a smaller outer caliber of the packing case for ease of covering.
On outer face of one of the slide-in side walls, a locking trough or recess 36 is provided. When the packing case is covered with the cover 4, a locking bar 41 on the cover 4 can be pressed into the locking trough 36 so that the packing case is locked firmly.
A protruding block 1 8 is provided at each corner of the bottom 1. Correspondingly a recess 42 is provided at each corner of the cover 4. The protruding blocks 18 can thus be received in the recesses 42 when the packing cases are stacked so as to permit stacking to a substantial height with reduced danger of sliding or toppling.
The vertical rims 10 are shorter than the vertical rims 12 so that the slide-in side walls 3 are on top of the force-in side walls 2 when the case is folded to reduce the volume thereof.
A slot 1 6 along each side of the bottom 1 is provided for withdrawing a mold.
When the force-in side walls 2 and slide-in side walls 3 are set upright, shoulders at the upper edges of the necks 22 and 32 just abut on the upper edge of the vertical rims 10 and 12, respectively, so that the side walls 2 and 3 cannot fali outwardly but stand vertically.
When the four side walls 2 and 3 are set upright, the force-in side walls 2 are disposed between the slide-in side walls. The wedges 34 prevent the force-in side walls 2 from falling inwardly. Similarly, the slide-in side walls 3 cannot fall inwardly.
No accessory or tool is required for assembly or disassembly of the packing case.
Claims
1. A packing case comprising a bottom, a first pair of side walls arranged to slide onto the bottom, a second pair of side walls arranged to be force fitted onto the base, and a cover, the bottom, the first and second side walls, and the cover being disassemblable and foldable for storage or transportation of the packing case when empty.
2. A packing case as claimed in claim 1, in which each edge of the bottom is provided with an upwardly projecting rim having an inwardly extending ledge at its upper edge, each of the side walls of the first and second pairs having formed

Claims (11)
2. A packing case as claimed in claim 1, in which each edge of the bottom is provided with an upwardly projecting rim having an inwardly extending ledge at its upper edge, each of the side walls of the first and second pairs having formed therein a slot for receiving the ledge when the side wall is assembled on the base.
3. A packing case as claimed in claim 2, in which a pair of guide bars is provided on the bottom adjacent and extending parallel to an opposite pair of the rims to define a pair of channels, the lower edges of the side walls of the first pair having neck portions of reduced thickness whose lower edges are provided with enlarged portions for sliding into the channels.
4. A packing case as claimed in claim 2 or 3, in which the lower edges of the side walls of the second pair have neck portions of reduced thickness whose lower edges are provided with enlarged portions.
5. A packing case as claimed in claim 4 when dependent on claim 3, in which each side wall has a shoulder at the upper edge of the neck portion for abutting against the upper edge of the corresponding rim when the side walls are assembled on the bottom.
6. A packing case as claimed in any one of claims 2 to 5, in which the rims for the first pair of side walls are deeper, than the rims for the second pair of side walls, the second pair of side walls being foldable over the bottom and the first pair of side walls being foldable over the second pair of side walls.
