Description

SPECIFICATION A knock-down chair or settee The present invention relates to a knock-down chair or settee.
Knock-down furniture is designed and manufactured for easy assembly by the customer.
The manufacturing costs are reduced not only because the assembly stage is omitted but also because packaging and transport are facilitated in view of the reduced bulk of the furniture in the knocked-down condition.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a knock-down chair or settee of improved design.
According to the present invention there is provided a knock-down chair or settee comprising two side pieces interconnected by front and back rails, and a two piece frame supported by the rails between the side pieces and defining seat and back portions of the chair or settee.
The present invention wiil now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an armchair according to the present invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the chair shown in Fig. 1 provided with a cover and cushions; Fig. 3 is an exploded view of part of Fig. 1 to an enlarged scale with an inset showing the assembled condition, and Fig. 4 is a partial view of Fig. 1 to an enlarged scale.
The armchair shown in Fig. 1 comprises two side pieces 1 and 2 interconnected by front and back rails 3 and 4 respectively and a tubular frame 5 which is supported by the rails 3 and 4 and defines a seat portion 6 and a back portion 7 of the chair.
The side pieces 1 and 2 each comprise an upholstered arm portion 8 and two integral legs 9 for the chair. The rails 3 and 4 interconnect the side pieces 1 and 2, being jointed thereto in a conventional fashion by means of dowels and locking screws. The front rail 3 is located approximately at half the height of the side pieces 1 and 2 so that it can support the front edge 10 of the seat portion 6 of the frame 5. The back rail 4 is, however, located higher than the front rail 3 so that it can support the back portion 7 at approximately the level of the small of a person's back when occupying the chair.
The frame 5 is substantially L-shaped and is made of shaped metal tubing formed in two pieces which each define an arm of the L-shape and are joined by slotting one into the other as at 1 1.The pieces of the frame 5 define the seat and back portions 6 and 7 respectively and each is provided with a network of springs 12. The front edge 10 of the seat portion 6 has a clip 13 attached thereto which is hooked over the rail 3 and thereby supported as shown in Fig. 3. The back portion 7 of the frame 5 is provided with a transverse bar 14 thereacross which rests on a ledge 1 5 formed by projecting part 16 of the rail 4 as shown in Fig. 4. The frame 5 is, therefore, strongly supported so that it can bear a person's weight.
As shown in Fig. 2 a pull-on cover 1 7 can be made for the chair so that it conforms to the shape of the frame 5 and the side pieces 1 and 2. The chair can then be made more comfortable by the provision of a large cushion 18 which is folded to cover the frame 5 in order to upholster the seat and back portions 6 and 7. A single extra smailer cushion 1 9 can also be provided. The pull-on cover may be designed to leave the arm portions 8 exposed in which case the arm portions may be made of cane, finished wood or metal having an attractive appearance.
It can be seen that, because of the simple way in which the various components of the chair are designed, the chair can easily be assembled by the customer from a kit of components supplied by the manufacturer.
It will be appreciated that although an armchair is described above, the invention is also applicable to the production of a settee by increasing the length of the rails 3 and 4 and the width of the frame 5 or by providing a plurality of frames 5 adapted to locate on the rails 3 and 4 in a side-byside relationship.
In place of the network of springs 12 in the seat and back portions 6 and 7 other suitable means may be provided, e.g. rubber straps. Such rubber straps may be of the kind made for the purpose by Pirelli who also make an elasticated platform sold under the trade mark SISIARA which may conveniently be used as a base in the seat portion.
