Abstract

1,040,932. Foldable rocking chairs. J. L. STABLEFORD. March 12, 1963 [March 15, 1962], No. 10034/62. Heading A4J. A foldable rocking chair comprises two generally rectangular frame members 11, 12 with parallel base elements 14, 17 connecting the legs of the frame members, and contacting the supporting surface 15 across substantially their entire lengths, a foldable base linkage 20 pivotally connected to the respective base elements 14, 17, said frame 11, 12 independently rocking about the pivotal connections, an upper linkage connected to the frame members above the intersection of the two frames 11, 12, and front and rear stops to limit the rocking movement; said base linkage, upper linkage and frame members are proportioned relative to said stops to permit folding of the frame members. Fig. 1 shows a chair in which fabric is secured to the upper linkage 27 to form a seat 28, and to the upper portion of frame member 12 to form a seat back. The two stops referred to are formed by lugs 31 and pins 32 preventing further forward and backward movement respectively. Arm-rests 38 are pivotally attached to the frame 12 so that they can be folded downwardly, and a detachable headrest 42 is mounted on the frame 12 so that it can also be folded. Fig. 8 shows a deck-chair in which the upper linkage constitutes armrests 54, and the seat, back and a foot-rest are formed by securing a single sheet 51 to the frame members 11, 12 and a frame 58. The stops are formed by pins 63 and the upper ends of a V-brace 65. The chairs are folded by folding down the arm-rests and head rest, or leg rest, then lifting the seat to fold the two frame members 11, 12 together, and then pressing the lugs 31 outwardly to release leg portions 35 which are then folded up about pivots 32 or 63.
