Abstract
With modern methods of ditch bank maintenance it is necessary to protect the ends of outfall pipes by means of headwall supports. These may be precast items needing to be assembled on site after substantial excavation and needing subsequent backfilling. According to the invention, there is provided a one piece preformed structure which can be installed with a minimum of excavation and backfilling. The headwall support is of glass reinforced concrete and comprises a face plate portion 1 with an aperture 2 for the outfall pipe, a pair of limbs 3 and 4, which may be spanned by a bridge piece 5, for embracing the pipe within the bank, and a cill or base 8 joined to the face plate portion 1 by a pair of divergent lateral walls 6 and 7. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Headwall support
This invention relates to headwall supports.
Various forms of headwall supports have been commercially available for some time. They consist of precast concrete items which need to be assembled after excavation and followed up by backfilling.
In most cases this work is acceptable as part of the economic price for the job but in some cases, particularly fitting of headwalls to existing outfalls at frequent intervals along a ditch or channel, the cost is too great.
I have discovered that in some cases, headwall support can be satisfactorily achieved with a one piece structure which can be mounted with a minimum of excavation and backfilling.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a headwall support in one piece and comprising a face plate portion having an outfall aperture, or a portion in which such an aperture can be cut, the face plate portion being solid with a pair of limbs arranged and extended into the ditch or channel wall, and with a cill or base on the side of the face plate portion remote from the limbs.
Preferably the cill or base is connected to the free plate by a pair of lateral walls.
A preferred material for the support is a glass reinforced concrete.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which the sole figure is a perspective view of a preferred form of headwall support according to the invention.
The drawing shows a one-piece headwall support integrally cast in glass reinforced concrete. A face plate portion 1 of the support has an aperture 2 therein for an outfall pipe which, together with the surrounding portion of a ditch wall or bank is to be protected by the support. Extending rearwardly into the ditch wall or bank are a pair of vertical limbs or walls 3 and 4 which are parallel with and one on either side of the pipe when in use. In orderto stabilise the limbs 3 and 4, and to minimise movement of the whole support, a rear bridge portion 5 is provided across the rear ends of the limbs 3 and 4 at the top thereof.
Forwardly of the face plate, there are provided a pair of diverging walls 6 and 7 and a base 8.
For installation, which is normally over an existing outfall pipe, a minimum of excavation on either side of and above the pipe is required and the assembly is pushed into the requisite position and then backfilled so that its position is stabilised by the limbs 3 and 4 and the bridge piece 5.
It will be understood that one of the main purposes of the support is for filling to the outfalls of drains that have already been installed when, for instance, a ditch maintenance job is being carried out and it is desired properly to locate and protect the exposed pipe ends. With this support it is not necessary to remove the existing pipe which may be up to 10 feet (3.m) in length, in order to fit the support because with a small amount of digging it can be slid over the pipe so that it lays flush with the batter of the ditch and can then be firmly back filled.
In the past it was normal procedure in the fed areas to fit the outfall pipes so that they discharge clear of the bank directly into the ditch bottom.
Maintenance was normally carried out by hand and it was easy to avoid damaging the pipe ends but the current tendency is for ditch banks to be cut by tractor-mounted flail machines with the consequence that these pipes are getting broekn off and the outfalls are likely to get blocked. This unit has been designed for this particular situation.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
CLAIMS (Filed on 21 May 1981)
1. A headwall support formed in one piece and comprising a face plate portion having an outfall aperture, or a portion in which such an aperture can be cut, the face plate portion being solid with a pair of limbs arranged to be extended into the ditch or channel wall, and with a cill or base on the side of the face plate portion remote from the limbs.
2. A headwall support as claimed in claim 1, in which the cill or base is connected to the face plate by a pair of lateral walls.
3. A headwall support as claimed in claim 2, in which the lateral walls are outwardly divergent.
4. A headwall support as claimed in claim 1, 2 or 3, in which the limbs are spanned at the ends remote from the face plate portion by a bridge piece.
5. A headwall support as claimed in claim 1,2,3 or 4, manufactured in glass reinforced concrete.
6. A headwall support substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
