Abstract

207,260. Withers, J. S., (McCormick Drilling Tool Co.). Aug. 22, 1922. Percussive drills. - In a drill of the kind in which cutters are secured in radial slots 2 at the end of the drill shank 1 by a collar 9 having a threaded engagement with the shank, the shanks 6 of the cutter 5 are formed with mitered intersecting parts 7 to make them self-centring, and the collar 9 is bevelled on the inner side to accommodate cutters of different sizes. The upper end of each cutter shank 6 is formed with an enlargement 6<1> adapted to engage shoulders at the upper end of the corresponding slot 2. The collar 9 is locked against rotation by a wedge 10 engaging a slot 4 in the shank 1. The cutting edges 8 of the cutters 5 are inclined as shown in Fig. 2 so that the two bevelled faces of each cutter head are of unequal size, this formation serving to impart a rotative effect as the tool drops through the sludge.
