Abstract

206,169. Kammerdiner, J. A. Oct. 30, 1922, [Convention date]. Bore-hole apparatus.-A jar for use in hydraulic rotary well-drilling comprises a. cylindrical shell 20 threaded to a lower head 15 and to. an upper head 7, the latter being connected at 6 to the upper part of the string of boring tubes; slidable through the lower head is a tubular T-member 21, the head 22 of which may be received in transverse pockets 12, 18 of the upper and lower heads 7, 15. The kwer faces of the head 22 of the T-member and the upper faces of the head 15 are correspondingly inclined. A conduit 23 is threaded to the T-member and slidably passes through the upper head 7. Grease is placed in the shell 20. In drilling, the head 22 of the T-member is engaged with the pocket 12 of the upper head 7 and the string is rotated. If the drill sticks, the upper part of the string is raised and turned until the head 22 engages the upper faces of the head 15 on which posts 19 are provided to limit the relative turning movement. An upward strain is then applied and the upper part of the string is rotated so as to cause the head 22 suddenly to engage the pocket 18 of the lower head and impart a jarring action.
