Slaughtering.-In a slaughter pen provided with means for positioning the animal and having a V-shaped block 15 and a yoke 16 for holding the head of the animal, the upper member of the yoke may be in the form of a closed loop carrying a hollow frame 43 within which a slaughtering blade or hammer 41 is slidably mounted. The blade is formed with an enlarged head 49 adapted to be struck by a hammer, and is normally held in retracted position by springs 42 The floor 2'5 of the pen may be slightly inclined and mounted on rollers, or may be pivoted at one edge or at its centre line. One of the Provisional Specifications describes apparatus wherein the animal's head is completely severed by a guillotine knife moving downwardly, upwardly or laterally in cooperation with a correspondingly-placed block which may be slotted to receive the knife and provided at its edges with stops. The knife may be weighted or may be operated by springs or by electromagnets.
