Abstract

The present specification discloses a smoke deflector for mouthpieces for pipes and cigarettes. The deflector comprises a top portion (A) and a generally planar portion (B) which has projections which engage in complementary recesses (D) in the mouthpiece when planar portion (B) is inserted into the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece. This top portion (A) of the deflector lies adjacent to the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece so that smoke sucked up via the mouthpiece is distributed in a number of partial streams and directions. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Smoke deflector for pipe and cigarette mouthpieces The present invention relates to a smoke deflector for a pipe or cigarette mouthpiece.
Recently smoking habits have tended more and more towards smoking cigarettes with a mouthpiece and towards smoking pipes.
It is well-known that, in the case of pipe-smoking, the tobacco smoke remains in the mouth of the smoker so that he can enjoy its taste, whilst, in the conventional case of smoking cigarettes without a mouthpiece, the tobacco smoke is inhaled into the lungs. For this reason many smokers have changed to pipes or mouthpieces. In the case of pipesmoking, as also in the case of smoking cigarettes with a mouthpiece, the smoke has to travel a relatively long way through the mouthpiece and a considerable portion of the nicotine tar is deposited in the mouthpiece before the smoke reaches the mouth of the smoker.Whilst, on the one hand, smoking cigarettes with a mouthpiece and pipe-smoking have the above-mentioned advantage, there is, on the other hand, the disadvantage that the smoke which is conducted in the mouthpiece is released onto one point of the mouth of the tongue is concentrated from with some force and this may cause localised inflammations of the tongue or the mouth.
The aim of the present invention is to provide a smoke deflector for pipe or cigarette mouthpieces whereby the above-mentioned harm is precluded.
According to the present invention there is provided a smoke deflector for mouthpieces for pipes and cigarettes, comprising a generally planar bottom portion which is suitable for insertion into the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece, and a top portion which, in use, lies adjacent to the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece and is designed so that the smoke which is sucked up via the mouthpiece is distributed in a plurality of partial streams and directions.
This smoke deflector is inserted into the outlet end of the mouthpiece and is designed so that it splits the smoke stream into at least two or more partial streams, so that the smoke in the mouth of the smoker is dispersed in various directions.
The present invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig. lisa horizontal section through the outlet aperture of a mouthpiece and one embodiment of smoke deflector according to the present invention which is to be inserted into this aperture, on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the mouthpiece which has been prepared for the accommodation of the smoke deflector, on a normal scale; Fig. 2a shows a vertical section like Fig. 2, but with an inserted smoke deflector, on an enlarged scale; and Figures 3,4 and 5 are three views of the smoke deflector from above, from the side and from the front, also on an enlarged scale.
The smoke deflector of the invention is a one-piece construction having a top portion A and a bottom portion B. A flange or raised part is provided both at the top and bottom of the flat bottom portion B as viewed in Figs. 2 and 2a. Corresponding recesses are provided in the mouthpiece so that the bottom portion with its raised parts can snap into these recesses in the mouthpiece.
In the top portion A, bores C may be provided and/or recesses D may be provided on the inside, through which the smoke which has been sucked up in the mouthpiece escapes and is distributed in various directions in the mouth of the smoker, as indicated by arrows.
The smoke deflector can be removed from the mouthpiece as desired for cleaning purposes and re-inserted.
1. A smoke deflector for mouthpieces for pipes and cigarettes, comprising a generally planar bottom portion which is suitable for insertion into the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece, and a top portion which, in use, lies adjacent to the outlet aperture of the mouthpiece and is designed so that the smoke which is sucked up via the mouthpiece is distributed in a plurality of partial streams and directions.
2. A smoke deflector as claimed in claim 1, in which two or more bores are provided in the top portion so that the smoke can escape in various directions.
3. A smoke deflector as claimed in claim 1, in which recesses are provided on the inside of the top portion so that the smoke can escape in various directions.
4. A smoke deflector as claimed in claim 1 to 3, in which projections are provided on the bottom portion so that it can snap into corresponding recesses in the mouthpiece.
5. A smoke deflector for mouthpieces for pipes and cigarettes, constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
