Abstract
A rotary, floor scrubbing device comprises a circular support plate 2 adapted to be attached to a rotary drive means of a scrubbing machine, a brush-carrying carrier plate 3 attached in axially spaced relationship to the support plate 2 by springs 5 urging the respective plates 2, 3 apart, and a plurality of two element, telescopic guides 8, one element 9 of each guide 8 being attached to the support plate 2 and the other element 10 of each guide 8 being attached to the carrier plate 3. The sprung mounting of the carrier plate provides automatic compensation for wear on the brush and uneven floors. The device may be mounted on a hand- propelled, wheeled framework carrying an electric motor drive, water and detergent supplies, and drying means for evaporating water from a scrubbed floor. <IMAGE>

SPECIFICATION
Rotary floor scrubbing device and machine
This invention relates to a rotary, floor scrubbing device and to a floor mounted scrubbing machine incorporating such a device.
Known rotary, floor scrubbing devices and machines incorporate a rotary brush element, the bristles of which engaged the floor to be scrubbed with a loading dictated by the weight of the machine, which weight may be above or below that required to provide optimum scrubbing conditions while wear on the bristles adversely affects the scrubbing efficiency of the machine and extensive wear before brush replacement leads to scouring damage to a floor. Furthermore, the brush is unable to adapt itself to meet uneven floor conditions.
According to the present invention a rotary, floor scrubbing device comprises a circular support plate adapted to be attached to a rotary drive means of a scrubbing machine, a brush carrying carrier plate attached in axially spaced relationship to the support plate by a spring means urging the respective plates apart, and a plurality of two element, telescopic guides, one element of each guide being attached to the support plate and the other element of each guide being attached to the carrier plate.
The invention also includes a floor mounted scrubbing machine provided with such a rotary, floor scrubbing device.
Thus the invention provides a rotary, floor scrubbing device in which the sprung mounting of the carrier plate provides automatic compensation for both the inevitable wear on the brush and also for uneven floor conditions.
Obviously, the rating of the spring means is selected to give the desired loading of the brush against the floor to be scrubbed to provide firm pressure but to avoid individual bristles of the brush becoming bent over, thereby reducing the scrubbing efficiency of the brush.
In detail, the spring means may comprise a plurality of individual compression springs.
Thus four compression springs may be provided, spaced at 90 intervals around the support plate and the carrier plate, the latter also preferably being circular. The ends of the springs adjacent the support plate and the carrier plate may be secured to the respective plate by a clamping finger overlapping part of the spring end and secured by welding to the support plate or respectively to the carrier plate. Preferably, the arrangement is such that the maximum extended position of the springs, when they are under no compressive loading, which occurs at a maximum extent of wear of the brush, is such that the brush is prevented from further displacement from the support plate and hence is prevented from inflicting scouring damage on a floor.With this spring arrangement the telescopic guides are preferably four in number and are located co-axially within each coil spring. In detail, one guide element may be in the form of a circular section rod, e.g. secured by welding to the support plate, while the other element may be a tube, of internal diameter sufficient to accommodate the rod, secured by welding to the carrier plate.
Preferably, the scrubbing machine comprises a hand propelled, wheeled framework carrying support structure for not only the scrubbing device but also its drive means, e.g. an electric motor, water and detergent supplies etc., the machine also preferably includes drying means for evaporating water from a scrubbed floor. It will be appreciated that when the scrubbing device is mounted on the machine, the support plate is rigidly secured with respect to the structure of the machine, the springs reacting against the weight of the machine to urge the brush into contact with the floor with a predetermined scrubbing pressure.
The invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figures 1 to 3 show a rotary, floor scrubbing device in accordance with the invention, and
Figures 4, 5, 6 and 7 show the machine incorporating the device of Figs. 1 to 3.
In Figs. 1 to 3 the scrubbing device, indicated at 1, comprises a support plate 2, a carrier plate 3 and a brush 4. Compression springs 5 extend between the support plate 2 and the carrier plate 3, the spring ends being secured to the respective plates by fingers 6 secured by welding 7. Co-axially located within each spring 5 is a two element telescopic guide 8 comprising a pin 9 secured to the support plate 2 and a tube 10 secured to the carrier plate 3.
In Figs. 4 to 7, the machine comprises a framework 11 mounted on wheels 12, and a propelling handle 13. The framework 11 carries a support structure 14, a lower portion 15 of which houses the majority of the scrubbing device 1, and an electric motor, while an upper portion 16 of which houses drying equipment of a known form.

Claims (16)
1. A rotary, floor scrubbing device comprising a circular support plate adapted to be attached to a rotary drive means of a scrubbing machine, a brush carrying carrier plate attached in axially spaced relationship to the support plate by a spring means urging the respective plates apart, and a plurality of two element, telescopic guides, one element of each guide being attached to the support plate and the other element of each guide being attached to the carrier plate.
2. A device as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the spring means comprises a plurality of individual compression springs.
3. A device as claimed in Claim 2, comprising four compressian springs spaced at 90 intervals around the support plate and the carrier plate.
4. A device as claimed in any preceding
Claim, wherein the carrier plate is circular.

Claims 2 to 4, wherein the ends of the springs adjacent the support plate and the carrier plate are secured to the respective plate by a clamping finger overlapping part of the spring end and secured by welding to the support plate or respectively to the carrier plate.
6. A device as claimed in any one of
Claims 2 to 5, wherein at the maximum extended position of the springs, when they are under no compressive loading, occurs at a maximum extent of wear of the brush such that the brush is prevented from further displacement from the support plate and hence is prevented from inflicting scouring damage on a floor.
7. A device as claimed in any one of
Claims 3 to 6, wherein the telescopic guides are four in number and are located co-axially within each coil spring.
8. A device as claimed in any preceding
Claim, wherein one guide element is in the form of a circular section rod, while the other guide element is a tube of internal diameter sufficient to accommodate the rod.
9. A device as claimed in Claim 8, wherein the rod is secured by welding to the support plate.
10. A device as claimed in Claim 8 or
Claim 9, wherein the tube is secured by welding to the carrier plate.
11. A rotary, floor scrubbing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
12. A floor mounted scrubbing machine provided with a rotary, floor scrubbing device as defined in any preceding Claim.
13. A machine as claimed in Claim 12, comprising a hand propelled, wheeled framework carrying support structure for not only the scrubbing device but also its drive means and water and detergent supplies.
14. A machine as claimed in Claim 13, wherein the drive means is an electric motor.
15. A device as claimed in Claim 13 or
Claim 14, further comprises drying means for evaporating water from a scrubbed floor.
16. A floor mounted scrubbing machine provided with a rotary, floor scrubbing device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
