Abstract

Mixing-apparatus.-A centrifugal machine, for the treatment of vaccine, has two elements moving relatively to one another at a high speed, and provided with passages which during the move,- ment are brought into and out of register with one another, the liquid being forced through the passages and violently agitated so that the bacteria are crushed. The base 10 supports a bridgepiece 11 carrying the upper bearing for the spindle, and also has an annular projection 17 provided with a large number of saw-cuts 19 inclined to the radial, as shown in Fig. 2, and also inclined to the vertical. The spindle 14 in radial and thrust bearings carries a driving pulley 26 and a rotor 27. The rotor has an upstanding and overhanging flange 29 forming a chamber in the upper part of the rotor connected by a passage 33 to the space beneath the rotor bounded by the peripheral flange 31. This flange fits within the annular flange 17 and has a number of saw-cuts 32 inclined in the opposite direction to the radial and the vertical as compared with the cuts 19. A pipe 23 with an adjustable cock 25 connects the annular space 18 to the chamber in the rotor. The machine is set in motion and a quantity of liquid is introduced into the rotor. It passes through the passages 33, through the intermittent communication of the saw-cuts 32, 19 to the annular space 18 and then back to the rotor chamber by the pipe 23, so that a continuous circulation is maintained. In a modification, the part 20 extends inwards and upwards to form a chamber for liquid the pressure of which will balance the centrifugal force of liquid escaping between the rotor and stator.
