Pumping-machines.-The rotating members of an electric motor and of a fluid compressor or exhauster constitute a single mass which is carried by a flexible shaft in such a way as to permit of high speeds of rotation. Fig. 1 shows an air-compressor in which the upper part 1 of the rotating member forms the rotor of a squirrelcage driving-motor, whilst the lower part 2 is given the shape of an impeller. The parts are placed in an air-tight casing 11 provided with a channel 12 for the circulation of cooling-water. The shaft 3 is journaled in spherical bearings 15, 16 pressed apart by a spring within a casing 17 and is suspended by means of a cap 19 fixed thereon and provided with vanes, acting as a centrifugal oil-pump. Lubricating-oil entering at 20 is discharged at 21, whence it passes through slots 22 to the bearing 16 and through a channel 23 into the bearing 15, escaping through a channel 24 on to a conical plate 25 and finally to a channel 26; the oil under pressure in the slots 22 slightly lifts the cap 19 from the shoulder 18. In a modification, the rotor is supported on a horizontal flexible shaft, which is in two parts located on either side of the rotor and carried at the ends in spherical bearings.
