Abstract

A cutting tool for trimming the spines of books in slip-folding and glue-binding machines comprises a carrier disc 1 having a chopping blade (7) secured to a block 5 arranged between two cutting blades (2) on the tool, by which long chip shavings are severed; the chopping blade may be mounted directly on the periphery of the carrier disc (1). A balancing mass is mounted at 180 DEG from the blade (7) or alternatively, a second chopping blade may be provided. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A cutting tool The present invention relates to a cutting tool for processing book spines in for example a slip-folding and glue-binding machine.
It is known to process the spines of book blocks by means of circularly shaped disc blades. Milling heads are furthermore known, which are constructed in the shape of discs and on which cutting blades of hard metal are fastened. In the use of cutting blades and milling heads of that kind, it is particularly disadvantageous that the paper shavings, which arise as waste and which in their length correspond to the length of the book spines, are very expensive to remove from the place of work. It is necessary to suck these long chip shavings away by high-powered shaving exhaust apparatuses with special shaving tansport ventilators and subsequently to compress the shavings into bales. The thus obtained paper waste is used again as secondary raw material in the paper production.
Furthermore, milling heads are known, in which paper dust, which is not reusable in paper production, occurs as waste.
According to the present invention there is provided a cutting device comprising a circular carrier disc carrying around the circumference thereof a plurality of spaced first cutters for cutting lengths of paper from book spines, and a second cutter disposed between adjacent ones of the first cutters at the region of the pitch circle thereof, the second cutter being so obliquely settable to the first cutters that on rotation of the carrier disc the lengths of paper are cut into smaller lengths.
The device may comprise a further carrier mounted to the carrier disc, the second cutter being connected to and settable relative to the further carrier.
The second cutter may be settable directly relative to the carrier disc.
The second cutter may be settable about an axis which is inclined to a radius of the carrier disc.
The second cutter may be settable about an axis which is inclined to a radius of the carrier disc, the further carrier having an axis which is co-axial, with the axis about which the second cutter is settle and which is inclined to the radius of the carrier disc.
The angle of inclination may be from substantially 1" to 40.
The second cutter may be so obliquely set relative to the first cutters that the second cutter has a cutting angle of substantially 10 to 30 relative to that of the first cutters.
For the avoidance of an arising unbalance of the carrier disc, a further second cutter may be arranged at 180 from said second cutterwherebyafurther shortening of the lengths of paper would be obtained. Alternatively, a balancing mass may be fastened at the carrier disc.
The short snipped lengths obtained through the use of one or two second cutters can be sucked away by a radial fan of simple construction and stowed in sacks by sacking plant. Compared with long lengths, they take up relatively little space. The lengths is determined by the speed of advance of the book blocks and the set rotational speed of the cutting device as well as the number of the cutters em plowed The lengths may for example be between 5 and 15 millimetres. Thereby, the short lengths enable easy sucking away for possible re-use.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a plan view of a cutting device in the form of a milling head, and Figure 2. shows a side elevation along line A of Figure 1.
A carrier disc 1, drivable by a motor (not shown) has first cutters in the form of blades 2 disposed around its circumference. The blades 2 are uniformly spaced and fastened by means of screws 3 on the carrier disc 1 in a pitch circle 4. They are angularly displaced but equally oriented.
A carrier 5 is fastened by screws 6 on the carrier disc 1. This carrier 5 is so arranged that a second cutter in the form of a chopping blade 7 can be screwed on to it by a screw 8. The direction of action of the chopping blade 7 is oblique to the direction of action of the blades 2. The chopping blade 7 is fixed at an angle aa, which preferably is between substantially 10 and 30 . The chopping blade 7 is in its entirety with the blade carrier 5 inclined with respect to the radius of the carier disc 1 by the angle ss, which should preferably be substantially 1'to 4 .
The unbalance caused by the arrangement of one chopping blade 7 on the carrier disc 1 is equalized by a balancing mass 9, which is fastened on the opposite side of the carrier disc 1.
When the spine of a book block is brought into engagement, through the advancing motion of a slip-folding and glue-binding machine, with the milling head arranged stationarily in it, blades continuously cut off a paper strip which is interrupted by the chopping blade 7, disposed obliquely to the blades 2, during each rotation of the milling head. The length of the paper strips is determined by the speed of advance of the book blocks, the rotational speed of the milling head and the number of the chopping blades 7.
