Abstract
The solutions obtained by heating free hydroxysulphobenzoic acids, or their homologues, in excess with water and mercuric oxide are prevented from gelatinizing when neutralized with alkali and cooled, by addition of small amounts of neutral salts, either before or after neutralizing; suitable salts are the chlorides, bromides, iodides and thiocyanates of the alkalis and ammonia; alkaline earth salts, phosphates, and acetates are less effective while nitrates, chlorates, and sulphates appear to have no action. The solutions may be concentrated and may contain up to 6 per cent of mercury; they are of therapeutic value and are suitable for injection. In an example sulphosalicylic acid is heated with water and mercuric oxide; after removing unaltered acid by washing with alcohol the product is dissolved in hot water, neutralized exactly with alkali (methyl orange indicator), p and a small amount of ammonium chloride added; if the neutralized liquid has been allowed to gelatinize it becomes liquid again on addition of the neutral salt.
