Abstract

An acoustic wave travels from transducers 8 along path I to receiver 9. A counter 5 supplied by controllable oscillator 1 is made to count to a predetermined count repetitively to produce signal W, and the time difference between the production of signal W and the arrival of the acoustic wave at receiver 9 (signal Z) is determined at 7, and is used to control the frequency of oscillator 1 to make the count time of counter equal to the acoustic wave transit time t whereby the frequency of oscillator 1 provides a measure of the transit time. A circuit 13 generates a pulse of predetermined width a predetermined time after signal W starts. The output t + tau of receiver 4 which detects the arrival of the acoustic wave is compared with this pulse to provide a degree of abnormality detection. If the output t + tau occurs outside this pulse, the propagation of the acoustic wave is regarded as abnormal. <IMAGE>
