Abstract
An X-ray tube includes a main anode 9, an electron gun comprising a cathode 5, an intermediate anode 25 substantially perpendicularly with respect to an active surface of the cathode and with an opening 33, and a deflecting electrode 27 for ensuring that beam (7) passes through the opening (33) to the main anode. Beam shaping electrode 29, 30, 31, and plate electrodes (34) (Fig. 3, not shown) may be included, while for magnetic deflection focussing, electrodes (34) are replaced by magnet (35) with poles (36), (37) (Figs. 4 5, not shown). Dimensions, electrical potentials, current densities and other operational characteristics are specified. Oxide or dispenser cathodes permit high current density pulses. Further correction of beam shape and direction can be achieved behind anode 25 with for example a small plate capacitor. Computer tomographic applications are exemplified. <IMAGE>
