Abstract

201,838. Fitch, B. F. Dec. 5, 1922. Railway platforms and stations.-To facilitate the handling and distribution of goods which are brought to and from a railway station in removable motor-vehicle bodies, an overhead crane is arranged to move longitudinally of a platform 10 extending between two sets of railway cars 18, 19, and to raise the removable bodies 13 high enough to pass over one another. The bodies are brought by road to one end 20 of the platform and transferred by the crane to suitable positions for distributing the contents by hand-trucks to the railway cars. The bodies have doors at both ends, and the platform provides free covered areas 14, 15 for transfer of the packages to the railway cars. In operation, the whole station may serve for inbound or for outbound traffic at different times in the day, or one side of the platform may serve for inbound whilst the other serves for outbound traffic.
