Abstract
A hydraulic excavator has a boom 3 which is provided with a knuckle joint 16 about mid-way along its length where the depth of the boom 3 is at its greatest, so that offset working can be achieved by swinging the inner part 14 of the boom 3 laterally with its outer part 15 held parallel to the axis of the excavator. Short hydraulic rams 6, 10 respectively control the elevation of the boom 3 and the elevation of the dipper 8 and operate from the knuckle joint 16 beside the two parts 14, 15 of the boom 3. The angle of the knuckle joint 16 is lockable either by an hydraulic ram 17 or by means of a perforated strip and a peg arrangement alongside the joint 16. The chassis 1 of the excavator is stabilised by splayed extendible legs 22, 23 of diagonally arranged square cross-section. <IMAGE>
