Abstract

A writing implement, such as a ball point pen, has a writing cartridge (12) which can be held alternately in a writing position and in a rest position relative to a housing (10). The cartridge (12) is movable against a spring force (14) into the writing position upon actuation of a push button (60). The push button (60) axially displaces a switching mechanism comprising a non-rotatable push bolt (38) and a rotatable switching element (26). The switching element 26 can be locked on both a retracted rest position and an advanced writing position by cooperating axial stop surfaces 32, 36 on the element 26 and the bolt 38. Furthermore, oblique cam surfaces 30,34 force the switching element 26 to rotate. The switching element 26 is releasably connected to the writing cartridge 12, the writing cartridge being separate from the switching mechanism. Standard DIN cartridges can be used. <IMAGE>
