Abstract

Winches; driving-gear; laying or guiding ropes on or off during winding and unwinding.-A hauling winch comprises a chain wheel 4 driven by a worm wheel 2 and worm 1, the whole being mounted in a frame 8 swivelling about the axle 5 in A-shaped standards 6, so that the winch can adjust itself to the angle of pull of the load. The standards are mounted on rollers 7 for portability. The worm shaft may be operated by hand or through two-speed gearing from a shaft 1C<1>, Fig. 3. The final wheel 10 of the speed gear is fitted with a pair of retaining pawls 11 connected by a spring. By rotating the cam 14, by a hand lever on the shaft 15, the pawls are thrown alternatively out of action, thus permitting the worm shaft to rotate in .either direction at will, but preventing any reverse motion. Loads are attached alternately to the end of a chain passing over the wheel 4, the chain being kept in engagement with the wheel by a shaped guard spring-mounted on the plates 8 with its surface close to the periphery of the wheel. An unhooking device acts in both directions to release the slack-side of the chain as it is paid out by the wheel.
