Abstract

In a method of making carbon fibre, multifilament commercial heavy acrylic tow is initially heated under tension to remove crimp and provide initial stretch. The tow is then passed through a pre-heat zone below the critical temperature. The pre-heated tow is passed through an oxygenation zone of at least two stages, gradually being heated up to a temperature of 220-250 DEG C at which oxygen is taken up without degradation in a first stage, and the partly oxygenated tow being heated to a temperature of 260-300 DEG C in a second stage. The fibres are held under sufficient tension within the oxygenation zone to stretch them. The stretched and oxygenated fibres are thereafter carbonized at a temperature of 1050- 1600 DEG C under non-oxidizing conditions.
