Abstract

In the prodn. of carbon fibres by heating organic fibres of aramide polymers under neutral atmos., the improvement comprises using a polybenzamide to which a sole thermal treatment is applied. The polybenzamide is pref. 'Kevlan 49' or 'Arenba 930' (RTM's). The process can be used industrially and is quick and inexpensive. The fibres produced have a modulus of elasticity of 12000-13500 da N/mm2 and a tensile strength of 100-180 da N/mm2.
