Abstract

A mandrel for supporting and clamping a workpiece having internal teeth during the external machining of the workpiece, comprises a sleeve 20 having external teeth 42 corresponding to the workpiece 43, and a clamping member 23 that can be twisted with respect to the sleeve 20 to engage with the internal teeth of the workpiece 43. Clamping of the workpiece is effected by relative torsion of the sleeve 20 and clamping member 23. In order to improve the centring of the workpiece and avoid tipping or tilting on the sleeve 20, the sleeve is formed continuously over the whole clamping length and the clamping member 23 is arranged within the clamping length in recesses 45 in the sleeve 20 and is thereby guided through the said sleeve in such a way that the ends of the clamping member 23 engaging in the workpiece teeth and the circumferential parts of the sleeve 20 alternate. <IMAGE>
