Abstract

In the carbonating of water a control valve 24 is located between a carbonating vessel 28 and the water feed pump 18 and is arranged to move from a first position to a second position when the pressure at the output of the pump deviates by a predetermined amount from an operating pressure so that any carbon dioxide which backflows via pipe 26 from the carbonating vessel will be diverted by the said valve to an exhaust. The control valve 24 is preferably a spring biassed solenoid operated valve which will move by spring action exhaust CO2 in the event of failure of the electrical supply to the solenoid valve. A level sensing device 42 for sensing the maximum and minimum levels of water in the carbonating vessel controls on/off operation of the pump and indirectly controls the operation of the valve so that when the pump is stopped, the valve will be in a position venting any backflowing CO2, to prevent such CO2 from coming into contact with the supply water. <IMAGE>
