Abstract
A spring applied fluid pressure released brake actuator uses one or more diaphragm-type operating springs 14, the or each spring being made up of an annular array of segments with each segment clamped at its outer end 18 and located at its inner end 24 in an annular groove 26 on a hut 24 of the brake release piston 12. In use the segments are elastically deformed and adopt a bowed formation and the axial force applied to the piston 12 is substantially constant throughout its stroke. Because each diaphragm spring is made up of many segments the risk of total spring failure is greatly reduced. Moreover each spring is simple to construct and eliminates the side loads normally generated by coil springs. <IMAGE>
