Abstract

The disclosure describes a method of impregnating a filamentary tow, e.g. of glass or carbon fibres, with a liquid resin, in particular a thermosetting liquid resin. The method comprises applying the liquid resin (from 4) to the tow 1, which is preferably preheated at 3 to improve wetting, and then bringing the wetted tow into wiping contact with at least one smooth heated surface 8, 9. This ensures that the resin on the tow is rapidly heated, temporarily reducing its viscosity and causing expulsion of air bubbles trapped therein before any gelling or curing of the resin takes place. The method is suitable for impregnating filamentary materials used in winding filament-reinforced composite bodies, e.g. by winding on drum 2 whilst heating using I.R. lamp 14. <IMAGE>
