Abstract
Oxide cathodes, suitable for use, for example, in electron tubes, display tubes, T.V. camera tubes, transmitting tubes, klystrons and magnetrons, and comprising a cathode support 1 consisting substantially of powder metallurgical nickel containing an activator element 7 capable of reducing an emissive coating 4 present on the support 1, this coating 4 consisting of a compound of at least one alkaline earth metal and oxygen, are fabricated so that the activator element 7 is distributed inhomogeneously throughout the support 1 and forms islands having a high concentration of the activator element in the surface of the support 1. The activator element may consist of Al, C, Mg, Si or Zr. In an example the activator comprises Mg in the form of lumps of Mg-Ni alloy which are coated with Ni and these coated particles 7 are then mixed with the other powders for forming into the cathode support 1. <IMAGE>
