Abstract

A heat pump is provided in which a chamber 10 having an axial inlet 13 for air or a similar substance (e.g. other gas or a gas/ liquid mixture) has means such as an impeller 14 for centrifugally directing such air whereby in effect transfer of heat from said air to air at a central part or volume V of the chamber is caused by the centrifugal action. The chamber has one or more outlets 18 for subsequent escape of the centrifugally directed air. The impeller may be rotatable with the chamber or rotatable relative to a fixed chamber. The central part or volume of the chamber may receive a heat exchanger 5 for utilisation of accumulating heat energy whilst air escaping under pressure from the chamber can be employed to drive turbine 6 or similar means to assist the rotation of the chamber or impeller. <IMAGE>
