Abstract

201,142. Spring, H. F. A. April 19, 1923. Pistons; pistons, cooling; connecting-rods.- The piston of an internal-combustion engine is formed with an internal heat-radiating mass a, Fig. 2, integral with parallel webs 4, 6. The mass a may terminate in a concave oil-deflector b. The webs 4, carry the gudgeon-pin bosses 9 and a guide-ring 3. The latter is supported also by webs 7 at right-angles to the webs 4. In order to improve the lubrication the head is formed with a bevelled edge 25 and oil grooves. The piston has segmental bearing pieces 12 on the sides which take the connecting-rod thrust. In a piston for a two-stroke engine the heat-radiating mass a, Fig. 5, terminates in an oil-deflector c and is formed integral with parallel webs 26, which are united to the lower edge of the skirt and carry the gudgeon-pin bosses. Other webs are formed at right-angles to the webs 26. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of radial instead of parallel webs and flat oil deflectors. The webs may carry a skirt separated by a gap from the piston head. A gudgeon-pin 15, Fig. 9 (Cancelled) has split ends which are expanded by the coned head 16 and nut 18 of a bolt 17. A cotter pin 20 is passed through the gudgeon-pin boss, the gudgeon-pin and the nut 18. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
