Abstract
 An apparatus 100 is provided for determining a layout of a building. The apparatus comprises: an inertial measurement unit (IMU) 108 adapted to track the spatial position of the apparatus 100 relative to an initial spatial position; an image detector 104 adapted to detect a plurality of images, each image being associated with a feature in a building; and a processor 124 and associated storage 106, the storage being adapted to store a plurality of spatial positions, each spatial position being associated with a respective image, wherein the spatial position is the spatial position of the image detector when detecting an image, and wherein the processor 124 is adapted to determine the relative spatial position of each said imaged feature utilising the plurality of images, and the plurality of associated spatial positions. The IMU 108 may comprise at least one gyroscope 112,114,116 and at least one accelerometer 118,120,122. The features in the building may include corners where walls meet, doors, windows, fixed items of furniture and sanitary ware etc. A further aspect relates to a method of calibration of portable electronic device accelerometers.
