Abstract

An infrared-reflective architectural paint comprises red iron oxide pigment, phthalocyanine blue pigment, titanium dioxide, and optionally yellow iron oxide, wherein the paint is free of IR-absorptive black pigments, IR-transparent black pigments and IR-reflective black pigments. The weight ratio of red iron oxide to phthalocyanine blue pigment is 3:1 to 15:1. In addition, the paint has a lightness value, L*, when dry, of 38-88. Preferably, the paint comprises 0.1-5 wt.% red iron oxide, 0.015-0.9 wt.% phthalocyanine blue, and at least 4 wt.% titanium dioxide. The titanium dioxide may be in rutile form and may have a mean particle size of at least 100 nm. A roof or exterior wall coated with the paint and a method of reducing the temperature rise of a roof or exterior wall exposed to solar infrared radiation by coating with the paint are also disclosed.
