Abstract

A method and apparatus for controlling the running of a spark-ignited I.C. engine (10) under conditions of fuel input less than stoichiometric, to improve the efficiency and stability of running under these conditions, utilises an ionisation detector (16) positioned in the engine exhaust gas duct (14) to detect those firing cycles with "late burn" of the combustible mixture during the firing stroke. The detector senses the increased ionisation of the exhaust gas flow caused by such "late burn" cycles, and produces unusually large voltage spikes (15) in its output signal corresponding to the occurrence of these "late burn" cycles. A control circuit (19) progressively weakens the combustible mixture in steps during running of the engine (10) until one or more such unusually large voltage spikes (25) occurs in the detector output, in response to which the control circuit (19) automatically produces a feedback signal which enriches the mixture to a higher value. <IMAGE>
