Abstract
Combustion air is admitted to a combustion chamber (5) via an inlet (7) which directs the air to form a swirling air flow which rotates about the axis of the chamber. A fuel injector (9) injects a fuel stream into the path of rotating layers of the combustion air. The problem solved by the invention is to keep the free oxygen proportion in the combustion air at a minimum in a hot combustion region, and to ensure that outside the combustion region no combustible fuel-air mixture is formed and that the temperature in the combustion chamber is maintained below the level required for the formation of NOx compounds. The problem is solved by matching the amount of fuel injected to the mass of combustion air which is applied to the injected fuel stream in a stoichiometric ratio. <IMAGE>
