Abstract

Winding-machines; stop-motions; tension arrangements; creel arrangements. - A wirewinding machine is provided with means for automatically stopping the machine when a predetermined length of wire corresponding to a given resistance has been wound and also with means for varying the speed of the traversing arm. The spool to receive the wire is mounted between a cheek b<2> on the motor shaft and an adjustable back centre c', and the traversing arm k<22> is reciprocated by screw and nut gear from a shaft d' driven at varying speeds corresponding to varying diameters of wire through friction disc gearing d<2> e, b<1> from the motor, the speed being regulated by an indicator e<7> and lever arm e<6>. The starting and speed-controlling switch comprises a rheostat j<4>, studs j<1>, and an arm j which normally is held above the studs by a spring j<2> mounted in the core of an electro magnet j<5> and pressing upwards on a plate j' fixed to the arm and constituting the armature of the magnet. A weak spring pulls the arm normally into the "off" position, but the resistance of this spring is overcome by the friction of the arm on the studs, caused by the pull of the magnet during the normal running of the machine, the magnet being in circuit with the rheostat and with the wire-tensioning apparatus. In the event of the wire breaking, a contact on the tensioning device is broken, the magnet is consequently de-energised, the armature being released and the rheostat arm raised and pulled to the "off" position against a stop j<8>. The traversing mechanism consists of traversing arms k<22x> loosely mounted on a slide k<7> which is adapted to slide along a shaft k<8> and has offset portions k', k<10> slidably engaging a rotatably mounted parallel shaft k. This shaft has mounted thereon adjustable stops k<1>, k<2> which are set by feelers k<3> to the limits of the bobbin, and serve to limit the reciprocation of the traversing arms. The, traversing is obtained from a reversescrewed shaft d through halfnut sections k<18>, k<19> secured one at each end to a rod k<17> which is carried by a pivoted stirrup k<11> on the slide k<7>. Reversal is obtained by means of a wedge k<14> on a sliding rod k<12> actuating a tumble wedge k<11> on the stirrup, the rod k<12> being actuated at each end of traverse by the stops k<1>, k<2>. The traversing arms are supported at the front ends by a pivoted counterweighted trailer k<23> provided with a cushion pad k<25> adapted to press on the wire wound on the bobbin, and actuated at each end of the stroke of the slide k<7> to push the pad on to the turns of wire last wound; in this way the spring grips k<21> at the ends of the traversing arms are raised as the wire is wound, and in the event of a break, unwinding of the wire is prevented. Should the trailer not be required it is removed, and the traversing arms are tightened on the cones k<7x> on the sleeve k' by a bolt k<22xx>. To render the traversing mechanism inoperative, cam projections on the rear of the traversing arms are adapted to hold the nut section bar horizontal by simply raising the end of the traversing arms. The wire-tensioning and recording devices are combined and are mounted on a framework f which supports the bobbin f<3>, from which the wire is wound, between adjustable coned centres f<x>. The wire is led from the bobbin over a jockey-pulley g mounted at the end of a tubular arm g<9> carried by a pivoted shaft g<9>. The tension is regulated by an adjustable spring h<6> and lever h<2>, a spring brake pad h<1> being also mounted on the shaft g<9> to press on a brake drum h on the bobbin centre. In the event of breakage the spring h<6> acts to rotate the shaft g<9> to break an electric contact g<13> in the switch circuit, and to press the break pad on the drum to stop the bobbin. The length of wire wound is shown by an indicator g<10> and counter g<11> operated through gearing from the jockey pulley, and after the requisite length corresponding to a given resistance has been wound off, contacts g<12> are separated by the counter, the switch is broken, and the winding ceases.
