Building-blocks, special shapes of.-In furnaces burning solid or pulverulent fuel, air under pressure is injected into the fuel bed, or into the combustion chamber, through refractory blocks built into the walls and having air passages tapering from both ends towards a constriction. Fig. 1 shows a part of a underfed furnace with outer and inner walls 16, 17 separated by a space 18 to which air is supplied under pressure. The inner wall 17 comprises refractory blocks 21 provided with tapering constricted air passages 25 communicating with the space 18 and with the combustion chamber. The blocks may be provided with spacing lugs 23 and with shallow gutters 24 at the discharge ends of the air passages. Fig. 5 shows the blocks applied to the wall of a furnace into which fuel is injected through nozzles 31. The blocks 21 are arranged above and below the fuel nozzles and air under pressure is supplied to the wall spaces 35, 37 from pipes 34, 36 provided with regulating valves to control the supply of air at different levels.
