Abstract

196,017. Bonelli, G. A. Dec. 7, 1921. Wave and tidal energy, utilizing.-Apparatus for utilizing waves and tidal energy comprises an anchorage 10 fixed to the ocean bed, a hull 11 engaging with and having up-and-down movement in relation to the anchorage for the utilization of tidal movements and floats 35 extending from the hull and acted on by the waves, and mechanism for converting the movement of the hull and floats into continuous rotary movement. The anchorage 10 carries piles 13, 14, Fig. 3 having racks 13<1>, 14<1> formed on them. The mill 11 is formed with an aperture 17 within which are mounted rollers 19 engaging the piles. The hull carries a fly-wheel 16 on a shaft 15 from which hangs an arm 20 carrying a train of gearing, the lower wheel 25 of which engages the racks 13<1>, 14<1> and the uppper wheel the pinion 21 on the shaft 15. From the arm 20 extends a second arm 27 provided with a pin 29 engaging a cam slot 30 in a block attached to the pile 14. On the hull reaching its upper or lower limit at the reversal of the tide the pin 29 engaging the cam slot draws the arm 20 laterally so as to disengage the pinion 25 from one rack and engage it with the other. The shaft 15 projects beyond the sides of the hull and carries crank-arms 32 to which are attached floats 35. The backward and and forward movements of the floats 35 are transmitted to the shaft 15 by trains of gearing 46 and pawls 41, 43 engaging ratchet wheels 42, 45.
