Abstract

193,848. Akt.-Ges. Brown, Boveri, et Cie. Feb. 21, 1922, [Convention date]. Cooling stuffing-boxes; connected to source of high pressure; packing, adjusting and compressing; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for.-In order to adapt a stuffing-box with ordinary deformable packing for use with a turbine &c. shaft, the box is insulated from the turbine casing and the packing is cooled and lubricated with water. A packing-container e is employed which is formed with a water-jacket f and is insulated from the turbine casing a by non- conducting material i, joint-making packing being inserted at h. To promote cooling, the packing c is of small radial depth and may be of cotton or hemp or soft metal in ring or granular form. The packing is lubricated by the condensation water and excessive tightening of the packing is prevented by springs k interposed between the tightening nuts and the gland. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the insulation i may be replaced by an air space and describes an ordinary stuffing-box containing a lantern ring supplied with condensation water. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
