Vices. - Self-centring vices having V-shaped jaws for gripping pipes and rods are constructed with one of the V- shaped grips slidably mounted on the jaw or carrier so that it may adapt itself to irregularities in the rod &c. The vice is particularly adapted for holding pipes and rods that are being cut, as described, for instance, in Specification 25,223/10, [Class 83 (iii), Metals, Cutting]. As shown, the jaws d, e are movable in opposite directions on the bed a by a right and left hand screw c. The grips e<4>, of which there are two spaced apart, are rigidly fixed to the jaw e, while the grip d<2>, which is opposite the space between the grips e<4>, is on a slide d' mounted to slide stiffly in vertical guides r on the jaw d. Spring plungers s secure a stiff movement, and the movement may be limited, or the grip locked when desired, by a pointed screw u engaging a recess u<3> in the grip slide. The projecting grip d<2> is to one side of the slide d<3>, so that the slide may be reversed to position the grip d<2> opposite grips e<4> spaced at different distances apart. For work i of one size, one of the vice jaws only may be movable by the screw c, the other being fixed. A screwed rod w is pivoted at w<2> to the jaw d, and may be engaged with lugs w<3> on the jaw e, and the nut w' operated to force the jaws into good gripping contact after the screw c has been operated.
