Abstract
16,483. Daniell, H. E. B. Nov. 22. Prismatic compasses; levelling-heads.-A portable periscope is provided with means by which a sighting-compass is hinged to or detachably supported from it. The periscope A consists of two tubes A<1>, A<2> carrying oval mirrors H, H<1> at an angle of 45 degrees in the axis of the stem. The upper tube A<1> fits over the lower and carries a lug A<3>, which engages a gap in the ring A<4> and is clamped by screws A<5>. The lower part carries a platform B hinged at B<1> to the stem and provided with screws B' to hold the compass. A spirit level K is mounted behind the mirror H<1>, a portion of the silvering of this mirror being removed in order that the bubble may be seen when taking an observation. The underside of the platform has a tubular extension C to slip over the cylindrical head D supported by a universal joint on the telescopic leg D<3>. The top of the head D is recessed to accommodate a spirit level E, and the upper end of the leg D<3> is slit and carries a clamp F, Fig. 4, serving both to lock the two telescope members together and to support two arms F<2> pivoted each about one of the screws F<3>. At their outer ends, these arms carry spikes F<4> secured thereto by screws F<5>.
