Abstract

8203. Schermuly, W. April 8. Line-throwing apparatus.-In a modification of the rocketapparatus described in Specification No. 5686, A.D. 1901, the rocket holder or trough is supported on a universal joint, and the line box is used as a counterbalance, so that the holder is held steady and the apparatus may be used for throwing a line from a ship &c. The spherical end of the rod b, Fig. 1, supporting the trough a is clamped in a socket c on a rod d, which is mounted in a gimbal ring g in the forked end of a davit. The line box l is suspended by the handle p in the clamp e. In a modification, the rod d is enclosed in a sleeve m, Fig. 6, so that the line box may be turned in any direction and held by a clamp n. The sleeve m is mounted in a gimbal ring g. The rods b, d may be continuous, the joints e being omitted. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the pivots of the gimbal ring g rest in slots in the fork of the davit. The box lid s is fitted with a stay which, when the box is closed, rests in a recess u inside or outside the box. The davit is clamped to the bulwark rail, and is mounted in a clamp or eye, as shown at w, Fig. 1.
