Abstract

10,317. Stibbe, G. July 15. Needles.-In a latch needle for a knitting- machine, the rear part of the latch is formed to make contact with the bed in which the needle slides, so that as the needle moves in the bed, the latch is opened automatically. The latch a, Figs. 2 and 5, may be formed with a projection d or protuberance i at the rear end to engage the bed f. In the former case, the bed may have a bevelled edge of hardened steel to engage the projection d, while in the latter case, the latch is turned by the frictional engagement of the protuberance i with the bed. The parts are so formed that, when open, the latch remains open and is not closed by the return movement of the needle. The latch may be cut away at j so as not to engage the bed when open. To facilitate the passage of loops, the needle stem may be made somewhat narrower in the region of the pivot to compensate for the increase due to the existence of the projection &c. The latch may be situated wholly within the needle, which in this case is grooved to engage a projection on the needle bed.
