Abstract
5777. Fairweather, W., [Singer Manufacturing Co.]. April 17. Sewing-machines; feed by needles.-The laterallymoving needle-bar frame 3 is pivoted to an arm 14<x> of the feed-rocker and at 16 .has a sliding- turning connexion with a lever 17 mounted on a lever arm 21 and pivotally connected to an arm 19 of the feed-rocker. By these means, the frame is caused to move parallel to itself during feeding movements. The needle is assisted during feeding movements by a lever 35 which engages the point of the needle and is moved with it by the parts 37, 39, 40. The feed-rocker is variably actuated by the parts 25, 28, 30. The needle may be supported above the work also by a guide 51, Fig. 4, on a bar 50 sliding in the needle-bar frame. The bar 50 carries a cross-head 54 which embraces the needlebar and a slide-block 55 on the presser-bar 7. Acollar 62 on the presser-bar determines the lowest position of the guide, and a collar c on the needle-bar raises the guide when the needle leaves the work.
