Abstract

120. Buie, A., and Loxam, R. Jan. 4. Current motors; regulating.-In a water motor for use in rivers, a number of waterwheels 7 are mounted on parallel horizontal shafts 6 which run in bearings 5 in a float device B. The tanks of the float B may be filled with water by pipes 2 or emptied by pipes 2<a>, so that the depth to which the wheels 7 are submerged may be regulated. The float is anchored by chains 14, 17 and a fender 16, and a boom 15 is provided to keep back driftwood. The shafts 6 are geared to a common shaft 10, from which power is taken by belts 13 running over automatic tightening-pulleys. The gearing from the shafts 6 may be modified, and the wheels may be submerged to a greater depth at one end than at the other.
