Moulds; moulding hollow-ware.-A battery cell or other liquid-tight jar or container is built up of separate sheets of rubber, or a composition of rubber and fibre, which are vulcanized together in a mould, internal pressure being obtained during vulcanization by a three-part core 25, 26, 27, the central member 27 of which is wedge-shaped to permit easy removal. The mould, as shown in plan in Fig. 1, is made of four separable walls 11 which are held together by bolts and nuts 13 and' engage at their lower ends in grooves in a base 10 as shown in Fig. 2. The sheets 16, 20 to form the cell are arranged in the mould and overlap one another as shown in Fig. 1, partitions 19 being provided if the cell is to consist of a number of compartments. Each wall of the cell may consist of a number of superposed sheets, and each sheet may itself consist of a number of plies pressed together. The exposed sheet of each wall may consist of pure rubber or rubber of higher quality than the remaining sheets, or the walls may be of wood or other material covered with a veneer of rubber. The bottom surface of each member 25, 26, 27, of the core is provided with grooves into which the rubber flows during vulcanization to form electrode supports 31. The end walls 11 of the mould may have recesses to receive the ends of headed studs 34 which become embedded in the end walls of the cell and form means of attachment for handles.
