Cylinders, cooling.-Fig. 3 shows a cylindercooling system in which is included a jacket c for moderating the heating effect on a reservoir, in which naphthalene or like fuel is melted, of the exhaust gases flowing through the outer jacket. The arrangement is such that, when the water is boiling in the cylinder-jacket, the jacket c is traversed by a mixture of water and steam passing up the pipe o. A condenser or a steam separator comprising a funnel n into which the pipe o opens may be interposed near the inlet of the jacket c, as shown, or the outlet thereof or both. The level in the cold-water reservoir r is maintained below that of the jacket c. When the engine is cool, as at starting or light running, there is no steam or water in the jacket c.
