Crank-case gases are vented, e.g. from the rocker cover space, through pipe 18 to a point 17 upstream of the throttle valve 16 in the air intake system of a fuel injection engine and the section of pipe containing the throttle valve, or an adjoining section, is heated by a heat exchanger 20. The heat exchanger 20 comprises a sleeve 21 encircling the intake pipe and surrounded by a pipe 22 through which a heating fluid flows. The pipe 20 may be connected by pipes 23, 24, to the engine cooling circuit, libricant cooling system, or exhaust gas system, or to the vehicle heating system. Alternatively the intake pipe section 15 may have a built-in heating jacket.
