Abstract

1038. Descubes, A. Jan. 16, 1913, [Convention date]. Electric operation and control; electrically controlled by vehicle.-Relates to an electric system for controlling the points of a group of sidings whereby a wagon or group of wagons is automatically directed to the correct siding by a single operation for each set of wagons, the operation being performed when the wagons approach the first section and without the pointsman having to concern himself as to the position of the wagons already dispatched. Fig. 1 shows a typical group of sidings, and Figs. 3 and 6 two positions of the control apparatus for directing a wagon on to a siding III. A similar control apparatus is provided for each siding, each control set comprising as many contact-slides V1, V2, &c. and relays R<3>1, R<3>2, &c. as there are points or sections S1, S2, &c. between the dispatching point and the corresponding siding. The slides are moved automatically by the wagons as they enter and leave the sections. The relays R each comprise two windings a, h, which control an armature c carrying two contacts d, e. The contact d is adapted to close the circuit of the motor for the points in the corresponding section, whereby the points are operated to complete the desired route. The contact e is for completing the circuit of the succeeding relay when the succeeding section is clear, whereby the control is ' progressed ' or carried on until the route is complete or blocked by another wagon. To dispatch a wagon to, say, siding III, the pointsman depresses the push-button T<3> of the corresponding control set before the wagon reaches the first section S,. The coil b of relay R<3>1 is thereby energized, and its armature c attracted, thus completing the circuit 1<Î> of the motor for points 1 and energizing coil b of relay R<3>2. The motor circuit for the second points is then completed, but the control circuit is held up by the slide V, as shown, owing to the presence of a wagon W<6> on section S,. When the wagon W<6> passes off this section, the slide V3 moves back to its normal position, Fig. 6, when the points 3 are operated and the route is completed. As the wagon W<3> passes over the sections S1, S2, the slides are operated, whereby the relays in succession have first their coils a energized, then their coils b de-energized, and finally their coils a de-energized. By this system, one progressive control cannot overtake or interfere with another previously started, and all the circuits corresponding to any section are broken as soon as that section is cleared hy the wagon dispatched.
