Post, claw, and like files.-Relates to letterfiles of the type in which the filing-arches are connected to a hinge member capable of movement in a direction perpendicular to the back of the file. According to the invention, the movement of the hinge wings by which the filing-arches are carried moves the main hinge joint only to a degree necessary to expand, but not to open the arches, the extent of the movement being limited by means of a stop in the path of the hinge joint. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, with the arches in the expanded position, the arches e, f are mounted on hinge wings d and are hinged about a joint k movable in L-shaped slots or guides l in two plates c attached to the back of the file. The hinge member is in the form of an arched frame m, Fig. 3, having bends n which are arranged to contact with the stop-portions o of the guides l, so as to allow the expansion, but not the opening of the arches e, f. The arches are opened by pushing aside the frame m against the action of a spring t so as to cause the bends n to pass along the horizontal portions p of the guides l, the hinge joint k moving further upwards in the vertical portions. The wings d are supported on pivoted members h by means of hinge pins g. According to modifications, the members h may be dispensed with, in which case the wings d are mounted by means of pins working in slots in the plates c; or the L-shaped guides may be replaced by straight slots having stops or striking-surfaces at their open upper ends.
