TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONGERN:
` Be it known thnt I, J; J. WAGENHORST, ot Philndelphin, Pennsylvanie, have invented en Improved Lock and TlLAlarm; and I do hereby declnre the following to he n full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of o lool: of n peculiar construction, arranged and operating 'within n tiil, in com binntion with nn nlnrn1-device, sothnt nn alarm will be sounded whenever nn attempt te open the fill is mede by onyunauthorized person. l Y
In order to enable -others to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operntion,re`erence being had to the neeompnnying drawing, which forms n part of this specification, and in which`l Figures 1, 2, 3, and Li-:ire sectional views et' my improved lock :rnd till-alnrm, showing the ports in different positions. i v
Figure 5 is a transverse section of the same ou the line 1-2, fig. l.
Figure 6, a section on the line 3 4, iig. 5. I
Figure 7, a. plan view of part of the device; sind Figui-e8 :t detached view, drawn to an enlarged senle Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the sevcralviews.
A represents a till, und B n portion of the counter, desk, ortable, in which it slides, und on the under side of which is a, projection, t, tig. 6, a. lockrcese, C, being` secured within and utthe rear end of the till, u-s shown in thedrewing. Four levers, E, arranged side by side, are hung to e rod, secured tothe 'opposite c and c' of thc lock-ense, iig. 5; and on a. projection, d, at the' upper erm of each lever are two 011Y which rest the lower ends of tumblers, D1, D2, und Da, the latter slidingr vertically betwee.. mines e c,
extending across the lock-ense. The levers E are operated by rods F, which extend beneath the till, neerly to the front end of the same, and cach lever has n tendency to remain in the position shown in I, owing teI the action of o, spirnl spring, fZ, which is confined between the lever und n cross-piece at the rca-r side of the` lock-case. A portion of one side oi' each of the tumblers D is cut uwny, lthus forming e. narrow projecting lower end, e, which bears upon one of the cainsf or j" of the adjacent lever E, (see figs. 1 und 8.) The positionl of each tumbler ina-y be reversed, so tha-t its projection emuy rest upon either the eemf ori-the can-1j, and thosef cams are of such a shape that when the levers are in the position shown in iig.. 1, the tumblers resting on the camsf will lne-elevated und those on the cemsjwill be depressed, while, on moving the levers in the direction of the arrow, the vertical positions of the tumbler-s resting on the some will be reversed. In the present instance the tumblers D and D3 rest uien the comsf ot' the adjacent levers, and it will be evident from the construction of the cams that when the position of these levers is reversed these tumble-rs will be depressed. The tnmblers Dl and D2,on the contrary, rest upon the cnmsf, and will hccorresponclingly elevated when their levers are turned. A plete or frame, G, is arranged to slide upon the upper portion of the lecheuse, its beckL ward motion being` limited by n lug, h, which strikes a flange., e', on the guido a, and within the frame project the upper ends of the tnmblcrs D and thc'lowcr ends of four bolts Il, which slide vertically to a. limited extent in n case, J, secured to the counter B, figs. ln-nd 7. The outer edge of the rcnr side ofthe frame (jr is berelled, as shown in the drawing, for n purpose described hereafter. At the upper end of euch of the tum'hlers D are projections j, the upper and lower sides'oi` which are inclined, as shown in the drawing, and ut the lower end of euch of the bolts H is nlug, 7c, euch of the letter, when'the pnrts nre in the position shown in iig. 1, resting upon one of-thc projections of the tumblers. A rod, K, is secured to brackets l, projecting from one side of the lockcnse, and a spirnlspring, nz, coiled upon the rod, beurs against one end of n slide, L, n strikenp, projecting from the slide toward nbell, M, which is secured to one side of the till, 5 :ind 6. rIlle slide L projects over ond is guided by the upper edge of the plete e' of the loclccnsc; and nt the lower side of p. bloeit, q, which fits loosely in n hollow projection on the slide, is o. lng, g, shown in iig. (5. Upon one side of the frumet is a lug, s, with an inclined face and abrupt shoulder, and when thc striker .in and slide ure drown bcckirom the bell, the spring m is compressed, as shown in iig. 6,. and the'slide is maintained in this position by its lug, q', which projects into a recess, r, of the plate e. By moving back the plate G the inclined projection s is brought'bcneath the lug g', which is'raised ot of the recess r, thus releasing the slide, which is forced back by the spring, so that the striker is brought against the bell. t
In tig. 1 the till is represented as closed, and the bolts H, which rest upon the tumbler-s D and D3, are raised above the upper surface of the frame G, while the centra-l bolts H, which rest upon the tumblers DI and D, extend within the frame, and in front ot' the cross-pieccnt the rear of the seme. li', while the parts are in this position, an unauthorized person attempts to draw open the til-l, the rear cross-picce of the frame G will be brought in contact with theeentral bolts H, which will prevent its further forward movcment, while the. drawer moves forward until the flange a is brought against the lug awheu all further motion of the till will be prevented. uShouldthe till now be moved back. the lug q of the'slide L will be raised by the inclined projection s of the plate G, thus releasing the striker and soundi'ng an alarm, as -bei'ore described, figs. 4 and 6. When/thc till is improperly drawn forward, the tumblers are moved away from beneath their bolts, and all fall to their lowest positions directly in the path of the rear cross-piece of the frame G, as shown in fig. 2. When the bolts are in this position it will irst be necessary, in order to open the till, to depress the tumblers D und Da'by operating their levers through the medium of the rods F, and then to push the till back to its original position, ignvl, the inclined projections 7' passing beneath the bolts. The rodsF are then released,'nnd the tumblers D and D3 and their bolts H are raised to their first position, ig. 1, bythe action of the springs d. The till may now be opened by raising the ccutre-bolts-H clear of the rear cross-piece of the frame G, so that the latter shall bel free to move with the till, this being effected on raising the tumblers D and D2 through the medium of their respective levers and rods F, (see figs. 3 and 4.) v l In closing the till, the bolts H are raised by the'bevolled edge of the rear cross-piece of the frame G until they again rest upon the upper ends of the tumblers, the projection ton the counter strikingthe slide L, forcing it back, and compressing thc spring m until the lug q falls into the recess r in the lock-case. A
As each of the tumblersD may be raised or-loxrered by reversing its position, the relative heights of the tumblers may tbusbe changed at any time, so that 'those acquainted with'the operations required to open the drawer at one time willbe lunable to do so after a change in the position of the tumblers is made.
. Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- l 1. The combination of the tumblcrs D and their lprojections ewith levers-E, on each of which are cams f and f', all substantially as specified.
2. The spring-slide L, its strikcrj), and adjustable block q, in combination with the lug t, the sliding frame G, its projection s, and the recess 1, in the case A, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The spring-slide L andits strikerp, in combination with an alarm-bell, M.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
'JAMES J. WAGENHORST. Witnesses JOHN WHITE, W. J. It. DELANY.
