Compression engines.-In a vertical tandemcylinder engine, the inlet and exhaust valves 5, 6 of the lower cylinder are arranged horizontally, and those of the upper cylinder vertically, the four valves being worked by separate rods 8, 9, 12, 13 from a single cam shaft 7. The valves 5, 6 open directly into the combustion chamber, and do not project inwardly when closed, so that the piston can be removed without dismantling the valves and valve-gear.
